Bring Her Back

"Bring Her Back" is a twisted, atmospheric horror ride from Australian directors Danny and Michael Philippou, the duo behind "Talk to Me." This time, they dive deep into supernatural and psychological horror with a story that’s as emotionally raw as it is disturbing. The film follows two step-siblings, Andy and Piper, who are sent to live with a new foster mother after their father's death. What starts as an uneasy adjustment quickly spirals into something far more sinister, involving occult rituals, possession, and a desperate attempt to bring back the dead.
The movie stars Billy Barratt as Andy, a traumatized teen trying to protect his sister, played by newcomer Sora Wong. Sally Hawkins delivers a chilling performance as Laura, the foster mother whose grief has taken a terrifying turn. Jonah Wren Phillips plays Oliver, a mute boy with a dark secret, and his performance adds a creepy, unpredictable energy to the film.
"Bring Her Back" is not your typical jump-scare horror flick. It leans into psychological tension, emotional trauma, and slow-burning dread. If you're into horror that messes with your head and keeps you guessing, this one’s for you. Fans of emotionally intense, character-driven horror will appreciate the film’s depth and the strong performances—especially Hawkins, who’s been widely praised for her unsettling portrayal.
That said, this movie isn’t for everyone. If you’re squeamish about graphic violence or find occult themes too disturbing, you might want to skip it. Some critics found the film’s emotional ambitions didn’t always land, and the VHS-inspired ritual scenes were seen by a few as over-the-top. But overall, it’s been well-received, with an 89% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a solid B+ CinemaScore from audiences.
With a modest $15 million budget and a worldwide box office take of over $23 million, "Bring Her Back" has proven to be a successful follow-up for the Philippou brothers. It’s a dark, unsettling film that blends grief, horror, and the supernatural in a way that sticks with you long after the credits roll. If you’re into horror that’s more about atmosphere and emotional stakes than cheap thrills, this one’s worth checking out. Just maybe don’t watch it alone.
