The Naked Gun

If you're a fan of absurd comedy, slapstick gags, and deadpan delivery, The Naked Gun (2025) might just be your new favorite movie. This action-packed crime comedy brings back the beloved franchise with a fresh twist, introducing Liam Neeson as Lt. Frank Drebin Jr., the son of the original bumbling cop. Directed by Akiva Schaffer and co-written with Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, this legacy sequel picks up the baton from the original trilogy and runs with it—straight into a wall, in the best way possible.
The story follows Drebin Jr. as he tries to live up to his father’s chaotic legacy while saving the world (and his job) from a tech billionaire’s evil plan involving a device ominously named the P.L.O.T. Device. Along the way, there’s everything from schoolgirl disguises and self-driving car disasters to a romantic weekend with a magical snowman. Yes, really. The humor is as over-the-top and ridiculous as ever, and that’s exactly the point.
Liam Neeson’s straight-faced delivery is a surprisingly perfect fit for the franchise’s signature style, and he’s joined by a fun supporting cast including Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, Danny Huston, and CCH Pounder. There are also plenty of cameos—from MMA fighters to “Weird Al” Yankovic—that add to the film’s chaotic charm.
Critics have been kind to this revival, with an 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a solid 75 on Metacritic. Audiences seem to agree, giving it an A– CinemaScore. It’s a rare reboot that manages to honor the original while still feeling fresh and funny. If you loved the original Naked Gun films, you’ll likely appreciate how this one keeps the spirit alive. And if you’re new to the franchise, this is a great (and hilarious) place to start.
That said, if you’re not into slapstick or find absurdist humor a bit too much, this might not be your cup of tea. But for everyone else, The Naked Gun is a wild, laugh-out-loud ride that doesn’t take itself seriously for even a second—and that’s exactly why it works.
