Black Phone 2
If you’re into supernatural horror with a side of emotional depth, Black Phone 2 might be right up your alley. Directed by Scott Derrickson and co-written with C. Robert Cargill, this sequel picks up four years after the events of The Black Phone (2021), diving back into the eerie world of Finney Blake and his sister Gwen. The film brings back familiar faces like Ethan Hawke, Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, and Jeremy Davies, while introducing new characters played by Demián Bichir and others.
The story follows Finney, still haunted by his past encounter with the Grabber, a terrifying serial killer he managed to escape. Gwen, now experiencing disturbing visions and dream-calls from the mysterious black phone, becomes the driving force behind a chilling investigation. Her dreams lead them to a snow-covered Christian youth camp, where a dark history begins to unravel. As the siblings dig deeper, they confront not only supernatural threats but also the emotional scars left by their traumatic past.
What sets Black Phone 2 apart is its blend of horror and heart. While it delivers on the creepy atmosphere and ghostly scares, it also explores themes of grief, trauma, and redemption. The film doesn’t just rely on jump scares—it builds tension through its characters’ emotional journeys and the eerie mystery surrounding the camp’s past.
Critics have responded positively, with a 72% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a Metacritic score of 61. While it didn’t quite match the audience reception of the first film, it still managed to top the box office on its opening weekend and gross over $112 million worldwide on a $30 million budget. Not bad for a horror sequel!
Fans of the original will likely appreciate the continuation of the story and the return of key characters. If you enjoyed the first film’s mix of supernatural horror and emotional storytelling, this one should hit the mark. On the flip side, if you’re not into dream sequences, ghostly phone calls, or horror with a spiritual undertone, this might not be your cup of tea.
With talk of a third film already in the air, it looks like the Black Phone universe isn’t hanging up anytime soon.
