Bugonia
Bugonia is a wild, black comedy that mixes conspiracy theories, sci-fi absurdity, and dark humor into a chaotic blend. Two obsessed young men, Teddy and his autistic cousin Don, kidnap a high-powered CEO, convinced she’s an alien from a secret Andromedan colony. Their bizarre plan spirals into a series of increasingly ridiculous twists, including a basement hideout, a fake website, and a plot involving antifreeze and spaceship conspiracies. The film leans into its own madness, with Yorgos Lanthimos (known for Poor Things and The Favourite) crafting a story that’s equal parts satire and surrealism. It’s a ride that’s as much about modern society’s quirks as it is about the absurdity of believing in aliens.
The cast brings their A-game, with Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons delivering performances that balance wit and weirdness. Stone’s character, a bald CEO with a sharp tongue, is both ridiculous and oddly relatable, while Plemons’ Teddy is a mix of delusional charm and tragic desperation. The film’s visual style is a standout, shot in VistaVision by cinematographer Robbie Ryan, creating a dreamlike, almost hallucinatory look that enhances the story’s off-kilter tone. Lanthimos’ signature blend of dark humor and social critique is on full display, though the film’s grim undertones and over-the-top scenarios might not appeal to everyone.
Fans of absurdist comedy, sci-fi satire, and Lanthimos’ unique brand of weirdness will likely enjoy Bugonia’s chaotic energy. However, those who prefer more grounded storytelling or find the film’s grim themes overwhelming might find it off-putting. The movie’s mix of ecological themes, corporate satire, and existential dread is both its strength and its weakness—think of it as a demented riff on Spielberg meets The Office, with a side of existential dread.
Critics praised the performances and visuals, calling it a “bonkers entertainment” and “a gripping experience,” though some found it overly grim or unsubtle. With its blend of humor, horror, and high-concept nonsense, Bugonia is a film that’s best experienced with an open mind—and a sense of humor. If you’re up for a ride that’s equal parts ridiculous and thought-provoking, this one’s for you.
