Bugonia
If you're into dark comedies with a surreal twist and a healthy dose of social commentary, Bugonia might just be your next favorite watch. Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, known for his offbeat and provocative style, this absurdist black comedy thriller dives headfirst into conspiracy theories, corporate power, and the fine line between madness and truth.
The story centers on two young men—Teddy, a conspiracy-obsessed beekeeper, and his cousin Don—who kidnap Michelle Fuller, the powerful CEO of a pharmaceutical giant. Why? Because Teddy is convinced she’s an alien plotting Earth’s destruction. What follows is a wild, unpredictable ride that blends sci-fi paranoia with pitch-black humor and unsettling psychological tension.
Emma Stone stars as Michelle, delivering a bold and intense performance that required her to shave her head for the role. Jesse Plemons plays Teddy with a mix of manic energy and tragic conviction, earning praise for his portrayal. The supporting cast includes Aidan Delbis as Don, Stavros Halkias as a small-town sheriff, and Alicia Silverstone as Teddy’s comatose mother.
Bugonia is a remake of the 2003 South Korean cult film Save the Green Planet!, but Lanthimos brings his own signature style to the table. The film is visually striking, shot mostly in VistaVision on 35mm film by cinematographer Robbie Ryan, giving it a rich, cinematic look that’s both retro and futuristic. The score by Jerskin Fendrix, composed before he even saw the script, adds to the film’s eerie and off-kilter vibe.
Critics have generally responded positively, especially highlighting the performances of Stone and Plemons and the film’s unique tone. It’s been described as “bonkers entertainment” and a “heady and gripping experience,” though some found it grim and overly bleak. If you’re a fan of Lanthimos’ previous work like The Lobster or Poor Things, you’ll likely appreciate the film’s strange humor and philosophical undercurrents. But if you prefer straightforward storytelling or lighter fare, this might not be your cup of tea.
Bugonia isn’t for everyone, but for those who enjoy a mix of satire, sci-fi, and psychological drama wrapped in a visually stunning package, it’s a bold and memorable experience. Just don’t expect easy answers—or a happy ending.
